DHCP Server Configuration in Cisco Packet Tracer

not found

In the previous class we have establish a LAN setup using the static IP Address configuration.

Now let us assign the IP Address to those computers in Dynamic mode instead of static mode.

In the Dynamic mode; IP Address will be leased to the computers for a specific time period depending on the range of IP Addresses available in the database pool.

The DHCP server will be used to configure this setup.

We can find the DHCP server under the End Device tab at bottom left corner of the Cisco interface.

We need to drag and drop the DHCP server on the white color Cisco packet tracer Interface.

First step is that we have to connect the DHCP server in the Switch port using the straight copper cable and all computers must be connected with that physical setup.

Now we need to assign the static IP Address to the DHCP device itself; so that the device can be recognized by the unique set of number in the networking topology.

Now we have to find the service option and create a database pool of IP Addresses along with setting the Subnet Mask which is also required to be assigning for the DHCP server; so that the connected computers can obtain the IP Address along with the Subnet Mask from the DHCP Server.

We also have to switch ON the DHCP server which by default it is kept OFF.

We have to choose the option (Obtain an IP Address Automatically) in all the computers those are connected in the setup instead of selecting the option (Use the following IP Address) which we have chosen in the previous class for assigning static IP Address.

Therefore at last the whole setup will be ready for obtaining IP Address automatically from the DHCP server but how many devices can obtain IP Addresses from DHCP server?

We can limit the maximum number of computers or other devices for obtaining IP Address during a single session; we need to use the option in the DHCP service that is (Maximum Number of Devices) for using these services.

Therefore the first group of connected active systems will be responded with the IP Address and the request of the extra numbers of systems will be rejected but once any system shutdown then another connected powered-on system can send request for the IP Address from the DHCP server; DHCP server will then lease the available free IP Address of the shutdown system to the newly connected system.
